Four-Duplex LC Fanout Cables


Breakout cables, also referred to as fanout cables, are optical fiber cables in which multiple fibers are encased individually and then covered in an outer jacket. Each fiber, therefore, has dual protection for ruggedized applications. In some instances, fiber optic breakout cables for 40g networks can eliminate or reduce the necessity of splice boxes, optical distribution frames, spliced pigtails or fiber patch panels. Terminations can be made with simple connectors or with a fanout kit, depending on application.

MTP/MPO Multimode 40G 50/125 12 Core (OM4)


Multimode MTP-MPO fiber optic cables for 40g networks are described by two numbers, such as 62.5/125, where the first number indicates the core size in micrometers and the second number indicates the cladding diameter in micrometers. The transition may be gradual or sharp between the cladding and the core, described as graded-index profiles and step-index profiles, respectively. They are also classified according to the ISO 11801 standard as OM1, OM2, OM3 or OM4; "OM" stands for optical multimode, and the different classifications are determined by the modal bandwidth of the cables.


OM1 and OM2 fiber cables were widely used for many years, but they could not support much more than one gig per second. OM3 cables had a range of up to 300 meters at 10 gig. As technology continued to advance, however, many applications required greater range. OM4 40-gig 12-core cables are capable of supporting a 10-gig Ethernet for up to 400 meters, a 40-gig Ethernet for up to 150 meters or a 1-gig Ethernet for up to 550 meters. OM1 through OM4 cables are all capable of supporting a 100BASE-FX Ethernet up to 2,000 meters.
